What is Generative Engine Optimization?

Buyers now ask an AI before they ask a search box. GEO is how you make sure the AI's answer includes you.

The front door moved

For twenty years, being found meant ranking on a page of blue links. That page is no longer the first thing many buyers see. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question in plain language — "who's the best dentist near me?" — and read a short, confident answer that names a handful of businesses.

If your business is one of those names, you've entered the conversation. If it isn't, you're invisible at the exact moment a decision is being made. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of earning a place in those AI-generated answers.

Why GEO is not just SEO with a new name

Search engines rank pages. Answer engines synthesize sources. An AI doesn't hand the buyer ten links to compare — it makes a recommendation, and it assembles that recommendation from content it can read, trust, and cite: structured pages, fresh reviews, consistent profiles, and mentions across the web.

That changes what matters. Keyword density gives way to clear, answerable content. A thin homepage gives way to FAQ pages that match how people actually ask. Being mentioned on one site gives way to being consistently described across many.

The signals AI engines lean on

Review authority — volume, rating, and recency tell an AI you're real and active. Semantic clarity — does your page plainly say what you do, where, and for whom? Structured data — schema markup hands the AI clean facts. Citations — being referenced on directories, forums, and local press builds the surface area an AI can pull from.

None of these are secret. What's hard is knowing which ones you're missing — and proving that fixing them actually changed the answer. That's the part most businesses never measure.

Where to start

Start by checking reality: run your buyers' real questions through the AI engines and see whether you're named. Then fix the highest-leverage gap — usually FAQ content and a complete, current profile. Then re-check, and watch whether your visibility moves.

That loop — check, fix, prove — is the whole game. It's also exactly what our product does for you.
